Fibromyalgia Syndrome
A very unfortunate fact about the fibromyalgia syndrome, otherwise known as FMS, is that it is a chronic disorder. This means that the patient would actually suffer from its symptoms for a very long period of time. Worse, FMS involves chronic pain all over the body, all over a person’s muscles and joints.
There are a lot of people affected with FMS today. Interestingly, there are two ways in which the disorder develops in a patient. One way is for the disorder to develop all on its own. Another way is for the disorder to develop with conditions that are of the musculoskeletal nature. These conditions can include lupus or rheumatoid arthritis.
Extensive body pain is one of the most common symptoms that a patient afflicted with FMS would experience. Common sites for this pain include the neck, the shoulders, the back, the hands, and the pelvic girdle. But this does not mean that these are the only parts that would experience significant aches and pains. With FMS, pain can actually manifest in any body part.
Each condition of FMS should be treated as independently as possible because the symptoms patients experience actually differ in terms of intensity. The frequency of the manifestations of these symptoms would also vary from one patient to another. Thus, it is a must to view the condition on a case to case basis. The more severe cases would involve burning sensations all over the body, as well as muscle twitches and spasms.
Another noteworthy fact about FMS is that the condition appears more in women rather than in men, although age is not really a huge factor here. Still, this does not mean that men are not at risk when it comes to FMS. There are also a lot of men who suffer from the condition. Even children are not exempted from this condition as well. Because of widespread pain, patients find it very hard to move and go about their daily routines. Thus, the condition becomes very stressful in this sense. As debilitating as the condition is, it is no wonder why a lot of medical researchers are exerting much of their effort in coming up with effective treatment for FMS.
Sadly, there is still no concrete medical method that can cure fibromyalgia syndrome. The condition itself is very hard to diagnose because its symptoms are not really as defining as they should be. Thus, coming up with an exact cure or treatment method is also as vague as the condition itself.
