Fibromyalgia Pain

If you experience extensive pain all over your body, and you feel fatigued for no apparent reason, then you just might be suffering from a disorder that is known as fibromyalgia. Fibromyalgia pain is quite different from ordinary pain because it is actually widespread in nature. You can feel this pain in your muscles, your joints, and even your bones.

It is actually a bit difficult to distinguish pain related to fibromyalgia from pain related to muscle tension, fatigue, mild depression, and sleep disorders. This is because the symptoms of pain are quite similar amongst these conditions. This is one of the primary reasons why no concrete or specific cause has been pointed out when it comes to fibromyalgia. Thus, the usual approach to the condition is to treat each of the symptoms as independent entities. And this is what most doctors actually do.

What’s more, when fibromyalgia is still at its earlier stages, there is that tendency for the condition to be misdiagnosed. In the past, there have been a lot of doctors who have misdiagnosed fibromyalgia as certain psychotic disorders. These disorders include hypochondria, somatoform pain disorder, major depression, and malingering. Since the condition involves extensive pain, doctors often mistake the condition for hypochondria. A patient afflicted with hypochondria has excessive worry, close to the point of paranoia, that he or she has a serious disorder or illness. Because of the extensive pain coined with fibromyalgia, it is quite easy to mistake the patient’s perception as just the figments of a wild imagination at hand. And this is indeed one of the common mistakes made in the past. All because of the fact that fibromyalgia does not have distinguishing symptoms, other than extensive pain.

Fatigue is also one of the prominent symptoms of the condition. But this is also quite common in a lot of other disorders as well. Thus, the mere presence of fatigue as a symptom does not really do wonders for fibromyalgia.

As vague as fibromyalgia may be, there are actually a number of alternatives when it comes to treating it. Medication for the condition usually involves the use of antidepressants, which greatly help in alleviating the disposition of patients. Sleeping aids and muscle relaxants are also prescribed for people who have the condition, since fibromyalgia pain can cause episodes of insomnia and sleepless nights. Massage therapy is also recommended when dealing with fibromyalgia. Keeping the patient free from stress as much as possible can actually improve the condition.
