You need to make the right choice of fibromyalgia food to avoid vitamin deficiencies. The use of chemicals in agriculture makes it difficult to get enough vitamins into your diet. The custom of cooking food for too long leads to even more loss of nutrients.

Therefore it is important to take daily supplements in the form of capsules or tablets, available at health stores, drugstores or special vendors. For maximum absorption food supplements should be taken at the beginning of the meal.

Vitamin C

Vitamin C is one of the most powerful antioxidants. Vitamin C ensures healthy bones, teeth and gums, it helps wound healing, the absorption of iron in the intestines, the production of stress hormones and it promotes the immune system.

Vitamin C is broken down by smoking, alcohol, surgery, trauma, stress, exposure to toxins and the use of certain medications.

Good food sources are: citrus, strawberries, black berries, tomatoes, broccoli, green melons, potatoes and peppers. Since vitamin C is quickly destroyed by heat and processing, vegetables are best eaten raw or steamed.

A lack of vitamin C can cause bleeding gums, swollen and painful joints, nosebleeds, a decreased appetite, muscle weakness, slow wound healing, anemia and poor digestion.

The government recommended amount (RDA) is 60 mg. The RDA for people with fibromyalgia is 1000 mg.

Vitamin A

Vitamin A is also a powerful antioxidant. This vitamin reduces the susceptibility to infections of the nose, mouth, throat and lungs.

Good food sources are: carrots, sweet potatoes, wart melon, papaya, pumpkin, watermelon and mango.

A deficiency of vitamin A can lead to susceptibility to infections, a rough, dry, scaly skin, loss of smell and taste, fatigue, damaged teeth and gums and retarded growth.

Vitamin A should not be taken during pregnancy.

Vitamin E

Vitamin E is also a powerful antioxidant. Vitamin E supplies oxygen to all organs, which reduces fatigue. This vitamin also fuels the cells, strengthens the walls of capillaries, protects red blood cells against toxins and helps maintain proper nerve and muscle function.

As with other supplements, people taking blood thinners should consult a doctor before taking vitamin E supplements.

Good food sources are: oil, seeds, grains, avocados, flaxseed, almonds, Brazil nuts, pecanoten, walnuts, asparagus, broccoli and dried plums.

Deficiency of vitamin E leads to dry skin, broken red blood cells, decreased libido, abnormal fatty deposits in muscles, degenerative changes of the heart and muscles and the beginning of auto-immune diseases (fibromyalgia is an autoimmune disease, the immune system attacksis healthy tissue such as muscles, ligaments and tendons).

When suffering from fibromyalgia, food choice is important and supplements like Evening Primrose Oil and extra vitamins can be very helpful.

The UK’s Advertising Standards Authority has decided that a press ad for the “Pain Ease Patch” must be stopped.

This national press ad was headlined with a quote attributed to Wimbledon champion Virginia Wade OBE and said “Discover Pain Ease, the patch that relieves pain – I did and it really works!”

The ad stated the device was recommended for “back pain and sciatica, Arthritis and fibromyalgia …. accelerating [sic] healing process”.

Unfortunately a solution for the pain caused by the fibromyalgia syndrome is probably not that simple.

A complainant challenged whether the efficacy claims in the ad could be substantiated and whether the device could treat the listed conditions.

The company Lifes2good had not provided full information on how the tests were carried out and the ASA noted Lifes2good had supplied summaries of the trials only and also that some of the trials did not seem to be controlled or blinded.

The ASA considered that the evidence submitted by Lifes2good was not sufficiently robust to support the strong efficacy claims and concluded that the ad was likely to mislead.

It also said the advert could discourage sufferers from seeking medical help. This could be potentially dangerous for certain conditions.

Advertising Standards Authority ruling:

They decided the the ad should not appear again in its current form because it breached CAP Code clauses 50.3 and 50.4 (Health and Beauty – products and therapies).

The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) is the independent body set up by the advertising industry to police the rules laid down in the advertising codes.

Coping with Fibromyalgia is one of those things that is definitely much easier said than done. Fibromyalgia comes with a lot of symptoms, none of them pleasant. And because this is not really a disease, the person having it doesn’t appear to have any reason to be in pain or acting strange to those around them.

Those with Fibromyalgia may constantly deal with social issues ranging from skepticism to accusations of hypochondria because they complain of pain, and are sometimes even disabled by pain, without any apparent physical ailments. It is very important for those who have received a diagnosis of Fibromyalgia to take steps to begin coping with this condition.

Getting help for Fibromyalgia requires that you at least accept that you have it and it is real. Some people don’t even believe the pain they feel themselves because they can’t see an obvious cause for the pain. If you do not accept your situation, you may continue to do things that will increase your Fibromyalgia symptoms.

In coping with this condition, it is particularly important that you not think that just because you’re having a good day on any particular day, the mysterious pain is behind you forever. You need to understand that it can come back and you should be pacing yourself on the good days as well as the bad ones. Over a long period of time you will begin to learn just how far you can push yourself. This is an important part of the process of coping with Fibromyalgia.

Do not get yourself tied in to too many commitments, particularly work deadlines. Some days you may just not feel up to doing as much as other days. You need to have flexibility in your life. In managing Fibromyalgia, you need to learn how to take on these projects and let people know that if something flares up you may be a couple days late, or you may not be able to attend a meeting, but you will get your projects done when you are again able. If you’re a hard worker, this will actually tend to be harder to get family members to understand than employers.

In order to get people around you to understand that you have a real problem, and that you are a reliable person with an unreliable problem, you need to educate those around you. This is an important part of coping with it. It will begin to seem redundant after you have to give the whole speech about Fibromyalgia again for the umpteenth time, but you have to do what you have to do to begin getting help for Fibromyalgia.

It may help those around you if you can refer them to an informational website or medical brochure regarding this condition. Don’t take offense at the questions those around you will naturally have. The more people ask you questions about your condition, the better they will be able to understand it and work with you to help you as you manage with Fibromyalgia.
